Highest Mountains and Peaks in Snowdonia / Eryri over 2000 feet in height order with their English Translations

highest mountains in snowdonia

Peaks in Snowdonia over 2000ft (aka Welsh Nuttalls)

When you walk or scramble up a mountain in Eryri (Snowdonia), it’s fascinating to understand the meaning of its name. In this post, you’ll find a list of all the Eryri / Snowdonia mountains over 2000 feet (often called Nuttalls). You’ll also find a little bit about the meaning of their name. Perhaps the most interesting is Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) itself which means Grave! Click here to download a free list of Snowdonia Peaks

Eryri is the Welsh name for Snowdonia (pronounced Eh-ruh-ree) Most people assume that it derives from the Welsh name for eagle – eryr. However, more recently is is believed to derive from the Latin oriri, which means to rise.

Highest Mountains in Snowdonia

You can find details on Wikipedia of every mountain in Snowdonia but I hope this list makes it really easy to see the height of the Welsh peaks, the mountain range and the English meaning of the Welsh name of each peak over 2000ft. I’m using it as a way to track my own walks, I’ll add links as I create posts about the routes I have walked.

This list is not a list of the highest mountains in Wales, it just refers to the highest peaks in Snowdonia / Eryri National Park. It does not include the Berwyns, Black Mountains, Cambrians, Clwydians or Brecon Beacons.

What is a Welsh Nuttall?

The Welsh Nuttalls are essentially any peak in Wales that’s 2,000 feet (around 610 meters) tall and has a drop of at least 50 feet (15 meters) from its nearest higher neighbour. This classification system was made up in the late 1980’s by a couple called Anne and John Barnard Nuttall, who got the idea from the list of ‘Munros’ in Scotland. My list is not the same as the Welsh Nuttall’s list – it’s only mountains over 2000ft in Snowdonia (North and South) – I started my list based on a book my grandfather owned which was published in 1951.

Hill Walking in Snowdonia Book by E.G. Rowland list of Distinct Peaks over 2000ft, first published in 1951. There are 53 on his list, I have added to it, so my list is a tick list of peaks over 2000ft in the whole of Snowdonia.
