Walking Up Yr Eifl – Routes & Car Parking

Yr Eifl is a mountain on the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales. My mother took us all on a walk up Yr Eifl (The Rivals) as a birthday treat when I was quite small. I remember the rocky scrambling at the top but not much else. If you have kids Yr Eifl and Tre’r Ceiri are perfect mini mountains for them to conquer. They’ll absolutely love the rocks at the top and the amazing huge rocky ramparts of Tre’r Ceiri Ancient Hill Fort.

Yr Eifl Car Park

To walk up Yr Eifl, park at the Porth-y-Nant Upper Car Park located near the Nant Gwrtheyrn Welsh Language Centre. The postcode is LL53 6NU.

Apart from also loving all the rock scrambling at the top, I was fascinated by the ancient history of this area.

Sitting on the rocky ramparts of Tre’r Ceiri

On this walk you stand amidst the ancient ramparts and stone huts of Tre’r Ceiri. It’s very hard to imagine the bloody hard lives of those who lived here. Although they must have loved the views!

Where is Yr Eifl?

The mountain group Yr Eifl is located on the Llyn Peninsula. It is a trio of mountains visible from Eryri. They rise up from the coastline looking much higher and more challenging than the walk I am sharing today.

The walk is actually very straightforward. A scrambly summit, sea view, big mountain views and a fascinating history. Unlike many historical sites it’s all so clear. The formidable (massive!) stone ramparts and hut circles give a little insight of a long-vanished civilization.

What are the three peaks of Yr Eifl?

Garn Ganol: 561 metres (1,841 ft)
Tre’r Ceiri: 485 metres (1,591 ft)
Garn Fôr: 444 metres (1,457 ft)

These peaks offer amazing views. They stretch across the Lleyn Peninsula to Eryri.

Tre’r Cieri Hillfort

“Tre’r Ceiri, means ‘town of the giants’. It’s one of Europe’s best examples of an Iron Age hillfort. As you walk around you will see the well-preserved stone ramparts which go all around the summit. It’s clearer to see them from the summit of Garn Ganol.

The remnants of numerous hut circles are slightly baffling. Especially so for anyone who hasn’t already read about the history of Tre’r Ceiri. The hillfort was constructed in the Iron Age and all those huts would have had earth roofs. The huts were probably not permanent homes but there for shepherds moving flocks of sheep around with the seasons.

The walking is fairly easy apart from a rocky summit. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a keen hiker, Yr Eifl is an epic little group of hills.
