Moel Arthur and Moel Plas-yw from Coed Llangwfan and Penycloddiau Car Park

A Clwydian Range Walk Under 2 Hours!

You can watch this short video or scroll down for more detail and some pics of my latest Clwydian Range walk up to Moel Arthur and then onto Moel Plas-yw with my Coltriever Ziggy. The route I took is below. I had to adapt my planned route due to a field of cows, my dog is young and they were right on the path so I felt it would not be sensible in case he got a bit barky and distressed them (or they chased me!!! – what a wimp)

NB. Having been turned back by cows after i had reached the summit of Moel Plas-yw I took a short cut, unfortunately the gate was closed with barbed wire around it but there was clearly a path on the ground that had previously been used, so I climbed a fence making sure I didn’t damage anything. This took me back to the original path and saved me having to entirely retrace my steps. The small dotted path that I wanted to take leads to a locked gate so i felt justified in finding an alternative route along the fence line, keeping well away from the livestock. You can see the barbed wire swing gate in my Youtube Video
Coed Llangwfan and Penycloddiau Car Park
Coed Llangwfan and Penycloddiau Car Park – the large free car park is very clearly signposted in both directions, the road to the car park is very narrow with passing places.
Head out of the car park and onto the road turn right and walk until you reach a clear finger post directing up to Moel Arthur.
Hop over a style in the trees and then you will see a very clear path up between the bracken, it’s a little steeper than it looks in this photo.

Looking back towards the Coed Llangwfan and Penycloddiau Hill Fort Car park with Penycloddia summit behind and the iconic North Wales landmak of the Moel-y-Parc Mast to the right. As you can see it’s not far to reach the start of the walk from the car park.
style on the route up to Moel Arthur
From this point you are out of a sheep field and onto the lower slopes of Moel Arthur which is covered in heather and gorse with the occasional grouse flying out from the undergrowth.
Looking up to the summit of Moel Arthur
Looking back to Penycloddiau Hill Fort – as you can see the path is wide and clear.
When you reach this sign you can either turn right and head up to the top of Moel Arthur or head straight on.

You can see the iconic Moel Famau Jubilee Tower – a little bump on the hill in the distance.
Heading down towards the Moel Arthur Car Park (on the other side of the hill) in order to pick up the path up to Moel Plas-Yw, annoyingly the path shown on the map has a locked gate and barbed wire fence so you have to drop right the way back down as it’s all thick bracken and no little short cuts… it’s good for the legs!
Moel Plas yw path start
Once you have got to the moel Arthur carpark you need to walk along the road for a few minutes until you see the footpath/track heading back up to Moel Plas-yw
Moel Plas-yw summit
Moel Plas-yw summit – it really is just a cow field (with a cracking view) here we’re looking at penycloddiau and the mast of Moel-y-Parc then on beyond right to the coast where the Clwydian Range finishes (or starts…)
