Penmaenmawr Headland Walk
I’ve driven past Penmaenmawr Quarry and the striking headland countless times on the North Wales Coast Road (usually on my way into Eryri). I’ve always assumed it would be inaccessible in the same way much of Dyserth Quarry is shut off to the public.

The highest point of the actual summit of Penmaen Mawr is 385 metres (1262 ft). On this route I walked up around the headland to get the amazing sea views to a height of 328m (1075ft).
Penmaenmawr Walk Video Guide
This older part of Penmaenmawr Quarry is in fact completely open. There weren’t any warning signs on the headland route I took. This route is well away from the more recently quarried area. However, there are still old buildings and steep drops with no fences. I wouldn’t recommend this particular headland walk to anyone with small children (they’d need to be on a lead like Ziggy was!!!). Take a look at the video which shows the paths in much more detail.

The route I took starts from Penmaen Park, up past Henar Farm and joins the North Wales Coast Path (which seems to split up into coast and headland path at some point – confusing!) Don’t come off the A55 at Penmaenmawr, instead head for Llanfairfechan.

Once you are up over a 1000ft you’ll be able to explore this completely flat section which has been heavily quarried. It’s rough ground covered in heather and a few quitey boggy areas but the old and clearly not well used path does continue around the headland. I was happy to explore the old buildings, take lots of pics and then head back the same way.

How long does it take to walk up to the Old Penmaenmawr Quarry?
This walk can be extended easily to make it into a much longer day out but to get from the parking spot in Llanfairfechan near Penmaen Park to the top it takes around an hour.
Take a look at a few more pictures from this fun walk! Do add a comment if you have any questions about the route.
