The best dog carrier for hiking with small dogs!
I bought the Kurgo G-Train K9 Dog BackPack last August after deciding that my little terrier was getting just a little too tired to come on any walks with any real incline. She was really slowing up and getting really stiff the following day.
It was on a walk with my daughter that I tested out carrying her in my own back pack, it was a bit of a squash but she seemed really happy being carried. After that I thought, this is the perfect way to keep her involved in our walks and I started googling dog backpacks to see what options there were.
The Kurgo G Train K9 Pack (a rather exciting name!) was so well reviewed. Despite it being over £100 which felt excessive for a bag I didnt know how long I’d actually use, I decided I’d go for it.
It’s been worth every penny! I think it’s also keeping Bramble healthy. You can see it in action on the reel above. Bramble actually seems fitter than she did last year. This is possibly because she gets included on many more walks. Previously, she’d just get a separate much shorter, flatter walk.
I absolutely love all the walks this dog backpack has enabled me to take Bramble on; the easy alternative is leaving her at home and only taking her ’round the block’. She’s 14 years old, and this year she’s already done a 3000ft mountain with me and countless more long walks I just wouldn’t have been able to take her on.
The bag has two sections, one for the dog and one for stuff – it’s even padded for a laptop if you need it! I tend to use the other section to stuff in my hiking essentials and then there’s still room for Bramble when she gets tired. There also side pockets and a big handle on the front so you can lift the bag with the dog in more easily.
Getting her in and out of the bag is really straightforward; I always make sure she’s securely clipped in with the attached clip, preventing any attempts to squirm out. She has never tried to escape, and she appears quite happy and calm while nestled in the bag.
The Kurgo G-Train has loads of adjustment so you can get the weight of your dog right. Bramble is around 8 kg and small. Carrying her is manageable for me and the thicj straps and hip belt make it a comfortable carry.
Carrying Bramble around definitely brings me joy, and it’s delightful to see people react with admiration as they spot her adorable little face peeking out of the pack.
I sometimes use my phone as a mirror to see if she’s looking happy, and I make sure she’s never in for too long at one time. Letting her have a walk and a pee every 30 mins or so ensures she’s really comfy. In most cases, being carried for a while seems to give her a fresh bout of energy, especially when it’s carrying her up the steep bits and then letting her enjoy the summits!
I’d thoroughly recommend this bag; I haven’t tried any of the competition to see if they’re any better, but I’ve definitely had my money’s worth and made some really happy memories seeing Bramble enjoying more exciting walks.
